Denali was collateral damage in a domestic dispute between a husband and wife, her former owners. In order to get back at her husband, the wife decided to pour accelerant all over the home, including Denali. She then let the other dogs out into the yard but locked Denali in a crate and set the house on fire. Lucky for Denali, the fire department reached her before the fire did. However, the accelerant caused third degree chemical burns over 35% of her body. Denali was transferred to Pasco County Animal Services, and when her burns started to declare themselves and she needed emergency specialized care, Denali was transferred into the Care of Suncoast Animal League. A rescue volunteer transported Denali from Pasco County Animal Service to Blue Pearl Emergency Hospital for emergency care. No one knew if she was going to survive and she was only given a 50% chance of survival. She remained in the ICU at Blue Pearl for 16 days until she was medically cleared to go into a foster home. She was wrapped in bandages for another 64 days, with her foster mom taking her to the hospital every other day for bandage changes.

Denali was adopted by a kind hearted person named Karey Burek who was her rescue transporter, her medical foster and now her forever mom. Denali continues to pay it forward by having a yearly “Gotcha Day Fundraiser” with all donations going back to the shelter that saved her life. She is a certified therapy dog and visits a local domestic violence shelter weekly, she visits the St Pete/Clearwater International Airport, schools, clubs and is a shelter Ambassador.
