Hugo's Story

Hugo was found abandoned in a public restroom in a state park in Pasco County. He and his two siblings had been dumped there at just 5 weeks old. Hugo and his siblings were transferred into the care of Suncoast Animal League from Pasco County Animal Services and given immediate medical care and Hugo was placed into a medical foster home. Hugo could not use his back legs, and began having seizure activity, so neurological exams were done at Blue Pearl. To determine the cause of his issues, they performed an MRI, a spinal tap, X-rays and blood work. The neurologist determined he had spinal inflammation, but they had never seen a case like his and were unsure if he would survive the treatment. The first medication they tried gave him an allergic reaction that made his seizures worse, and his foster mom Karey did not know if he was going to survive. Once the medication was changed his seizures stopped immediately. Hugo went through months of physical therapy to strengthen his legs and work on his range of motion. He still gets daily massages to keep his muscles in good shape and joint supplements.

Now he goes around to events in his little stroller and greets people making them smile! What a cutie!

When Hugo was getting neutered, the veterinarians didn’t realize how compromised his immune system still was…even after all of his medication and therapy. The day after his neuter surgery, he started bleeding out of his incision and was rushed to Blue Pearl Emergency hospital where he stayed in the ICU for 6 days. It was determined that because of Hugo’s genetic issues, he is unable to heal. Once he was stable enough to leave the hospital, Hugo went back home to Karey for daily bandage changes and wound cleaning.

Hugo is now living a healthy and happy life with his fur sister Denali. He is a certified therapy dog who visits schools, the St Pete/Clearwater International Airport, hospitals and shelters.
